Lenticular printing

Printing of images is no longer what it used to be. Image printing in the modern age has become much more specialized and advanced in nature, thus raising images from their static, flat and leveled representations and endowing them with a depth and motion which was not to be found in them before this. Lenticular and 3D printing methods deserve a special mention here, as this technology has invested the image printing industry with awesome capacities, enabling it to produce illustrations which occur with an illusion of depth and/or an ability to change/move as they are observed from a variety of angles.

The concept of lenticular printing however is nothing new and has been there since the 1940s. Many of the novelty items in the previous years like cereal packets, fridge magnets, rulers and mouse mats were often invested with this technology and pictures that showed flipping objects or sweeping gestures often borrowed notions from it. However, it is only of late that it has been started to be used intensely in the printing industry for the purpose of producing advertising graphic that tends to shift significance, as per the shift of the viewing angle. Lenticular and 3D printing tools are now being rampantly used to show products and items in motion. The 3D depth, intensity, color and motion that is now presented by the modern modes of lenticular printing technology is truly awesome and striking in nature.

Technique of Lenticular imaging

To be more accurate, lenticular imaging is a technique of printing which enables normal, static and flat images to gain a dynamism, depth and motion that is special and unique. The “magic” effect of a 3D poster, for instance, borrows its movements from Lenticular technology. It is nothing but an optical illusion that is generated by a plastic leaf that has multiple rows of tiny lenses spread over it.

Image is a very important ingredient in Lenticular effect build-up. An image, in fact, is specially formulated to become compatible with a lens. Based on the concept of multiple imaging, a series of images are then interlaced together, segmented into strips and finally merged together to form one single image at the end. The size and dimension of the strips is decided upon by the lenticular lens that is employed for the purpose and the resolution of the lenticular printing device that is used in the process.

Each lens that is placed in a lenticular sheet magnifies a tiny portion of the underlying image and with every change of the viewing angle, a specific area of the image is amplified, thus changing its appearance in a series, when viewed from changing angles. The effect can be simple yet overpowering and can range from little flicks to multiple edges of motion. For 3D image results, the lenticular lenses are cleverly positioned in a vertical stance. This is truly an amazing print technology which has been successful in churning out grand mobile images in this media frenzy world. And why only media? 3D POS or 3D point of sale graphics is a hot option for retailers now who wish to employ this super UV printing technology in display items and proto-type packaging in their shops.

Advantages of Lenticular and 3D printing

  • It has been observed that any advertising campaign which integrates lenticular printing captivates attention 6 x more than a traditional static print advertisement.
  • Extremely cost-effective in nature, Lenticular imaging also helps in higher brand recalling and increased sales.
  • Can be used to produce images which range from tiny to billboard sizes, and in volumes that vary from one to million.

Uses for lenticular printing

Lenticular and 3D printing is used in Indoor and outdoor advertising, shop displays, trading cards, window displays, 3D POS, Sales Promotional Items and Corporate gifts.

Lenticular imaging and 3D imaging are the exclusive forte of specialists and one having a full UV offset, along with digital printing capacities can only produce several types of Lenticular printing results, which include Flip Lenticular, ZOOMING LENTICULAR (Zooming Motion), MORPHING LENTICULAR (smooth movement from one image to another) and MOTION LENTICULAR (impression of animation) effects. These techniques can be used individually or in combination to give an ultimate effect that is as visually attractive as technically perfect.
